Romance readers, our next book-to-screen adaptation is almost here!
Ali Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis is officially making its way to Prime Video this month, and after seeing the new trailer, I’m even more excited to watch Olive and Adam’s story come to life.
The movie stars Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, and from what we’ve seen so far, it looks like we’re getting plenty of the moments readers loved from the book—including a few scenes I immediately recognized in the trailer.
With the premiere just a few weeks away, here’s everything we know about The Love Hypothesis movie.
When Does The Love Hypothesis Come Out?
We don’t have to wait much longer.
The Love Hypothesis will premiere globally on Prime Video on September 23, 2026.
Even better, this isn’t one of those adaptations where we get an announcement and then wait years to actually see it. The movie is almost here.
What Is The Love Hypothesis About?
If you haven’t read the book yet, The Love Hypothesis follows Olive Smith, a Ph.D. candidate who finds herself in a fake relationship with intimidating professor Adam Carlsen after one very impulsive kiss.
Olive is trying to convince her best friend, Ahn, that she’s completely over her former crush, Jeremy. Adam has his own reasons for going along with the arrangement, and what starts as a mutually beneficial fake relationship eventually becomes a lot more complicated.
Fake dating, opposites attract, plenty of awkward moments—basically, everything I want from a rom-com.
The movie is based on Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling 2021 novel.
Meet Olive and Adam
Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith
Lili Reinhart is taking on the role of Olive, and I’m really excited to see her in a rom-com like this.
Most people probably know her as Betty Cooper from Riverdale, but this feels like such a different role for her.
Reinhart isn’t just starring in the movie either—she’s also an executive producer and was involved in decisions surrounding the adaptation, including casting.
From the trailer, I can already see some of Olive’s awkwardness and humor coming through, which is such an important part of making this character work.
Tom Bateman as Adam Carlsen
Tom Bateman will play Adam, and I’ll admit that casting a character readers have pictured in their heads for years was always going to be a challenge.
Adam is intimidating, blunt, and not exactly known for being warm and fuzzy. But underneath all of that is the character readers fell in love with.
The trailer has made me much more curious to see Bateman’s take on him—and, most importantly, whether he and Reinhart can capture Olive and Adam’s chemistry.
Who Else Is in the Cast?
Olive and Adam may be at the center of the story, but we also know who’s playing several of the other characters from the book.
Rachel Marsh plays Olive’s best friend Ahn, while Nicholas Duvernay plays Jeremy. The cast also includes Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan.
Claire Scanlon directs the movie, with Sarah Rothschild adapting Hazelwood’s novel for the screen.

This is where my excitement really went up.
Prime Video released the official trailer on August 26, giving us our best look yet at Olive and Adam’s fake relationship—and book readers will probably recognize quite a few moments.
We get the kiss that starts everything, Olive and Adam trying to navigate their fake relationship, and yes…the sunscreen scene made it into the movie.
If you know, you know.
The trailer also teases the hotel-room sequence and several other moments between Olive and Adam that should look very familiar to anyone who’s read the book.
That’s probably what has me most optimistic about the adaptation. Obviously, a movie can’t include every scene from a book, but so far it looks like the filmmakers understand which moments readers really want to see.
How Closely Will the Movie Follow the Book?
That’s always the big question with any book adaptation.
Based on the trailer, it looks like the movie is keeping the basic setup and many of the fan-favorite moments intact. But I’m sure we’ll see some changes along the way.
And honestly, I’m okay with that.
I don’t need an adaptation to recreate every page of the book exactly. I just want it to capture what made me love the story in the first place.
For The Love Hypothesis, that’s Olive and Adam’s chemistry, the fake-dating awkwardness, Olive’s friendships, the STEM setting, and all those little moments when their supposedly fake relationship starts feeling very real.
My Thoughts So Far
I’m feeling pretty optimistic about this one.
The Love Hypothesis is exactly the kind of romance that feels made for a movie. Fake dating is always fun to watch play out on screen, and Olive and Adam have so many memorable moments that I’m excited to see brought to life.
The trailer definitely increased my excitement, especially after seeing how many recognizable scenes they included.
Of course, trailers can only tell us so much. The real test will be whether Olive and Adam have the chemistry that made readers fall in love with them in the first place.
Luckily, we won’t have to wait very long to find out.
